Safe Places

Safe Place

Safe Place is a national youth outreach program that educates thousands of young people every year about the dangers of running away or trying to resolve difficult, threatening situations on their own. Safe Place provides emergency services and temporary housing for youth in these situations. Rainbow House, Inc. embraces this community initiative to provide safe havens and resources for youth in crisis.

How it Works

Rainbow House works with Safe Place to provide immediate help and supportive resources for all young people in crisis. Teens can text the word “Safe” and their current location to 69866 for real-time information on the closest Safe Place location, youth shelter, or hotline number.

Once at a location, the Safe Place staff member connects them with Rainbow House. After arriving at Rainbow House, counselors meet with the youth to provide professional support, resources, help, and referrals for both them and their families.

Rainbow House is a Safe Place

Why Kids Need Safe Place

According to the National Runaway Switchboard, there are over 1 million homeless youth on any given night in the United States. These kids experience high rates of physical and sexual abuse, mental health disabilities, substance abuse, and even death. Many of them leave home on their own to escape these same conditions, while others may be forced out by family members.

No matter the reason, there are safe alternatives. Youth can go to any designated Safe Place site for immediate help to navigate their problems with the support of caring adults.

Safe Place Locations

These are youth friendly businesses, schools, fire stations, libraries, YMCAs, and other appropriate public buildings. Facilities may also display the distinctive yellow and black Safe Place sign. In many communities the local transit system takes part, designating buses as mobile Safe Place sites.

Rainbow House partners with Safe Place locations in Fayette, Fulton, Henry, DeKalb, and Clayton County. In Clayton County, every QuikTrip service station, Fire Departments, and the Clayton County Public School System are all designated Safe Place locations.
